Living in Southern Vermont
It’s no secret that Vermont is a great vacation destination. If you enjoy beautiful mountain vistas and skiing, quaint villages and farms, weathered barns and covered bridges, you won’t be disappointed. Local food, arts and culture, and rural, small town life bring back seasonal visitors and homeowners year after year.
Alongside the scenery and hospitality is another Vermont where people enjoy this quality of life year round while building careers. From manufacturing to family farms, medical centers to hospitality, traditional banks to tech-based startups, Southern Vermont’s growing employers need talented people to join their teams.
Don’t let the rural character and small scale fool you. Southern Vermont has it all. The region’s arts, educational and recreational offerings are world class, and our companies are connected to the world through trade and technology.

Instead of one major urban center the area features multiple “hubs”. Brattleboro, Bennington, Bellows Falls and Manchester anchor each corner of the region. The major resort areas of Stratton and Mount Snow are nestled among the Green Mountain peaks running down the center of Southern Vermont. The region features dozens of unique towns, from Putney to Wilmington, Londonderry to Pownall. Do you want to live in a college town or a resort community where you can ski and golf? Are village life, a farmstead and quiet country roads calling you? Seeking a trendy loft apartment with artisanal brews and nature at your doorstep? You can find your perfect home town here.
Southern Vermont is ideally located, convenient to the rest of New England. Much of the region’s workforce crosses state borders to work each day. Hartford and Albany offer easy access to international airports, with Boston just 2 hours away and New York City close enough for a weekend trip. Every day feels like a getaway, with the world at our doorstep.
As part of a four state region, Southern Vermont is accessible to opportunities, amenities and communities that fit any lifestyle. It is surrounded by distinct regions with their own special character and economic mix. To the east and north are New Hampshire’s Keene-Monadnock region, and the Dartmouth-Hanover region. North in Vermont are Rutland, Springfield, and White River Junction. Down I-91 is the Pioneer Valley of Western Massachusetts and the five colleges area of Northampton and Amherst including the University of Massachusetts flagship campus. The Springfield-Hartford metro region just beyond. South of Southern Vermont are the famous Berkshires, with New York’s Troy-Albany capital region to the southwest.
