Southern Vermont is a great place for jobs in the building trades. Much of the construction activity is in residential homebuilding and improvement. With a very large number of second homes there is a tremendous amount of residential construction work. Much of this work is executed by a wide range of small firms who hire using traditional outlets – the local newspapers Brattleboro Reformer, Delaware Valley News, Bennington Banner, or Manchester Journal. Employers also post to Indeed.com and through the Vermont Department of Labor Joblink.
Job postings can be found at web sites for the larger construction firms involved in commercial, industrial and downtown projects. For instance Dupuis Construction built the Carinthia Lodge at Mount Snow, a beautiful timber frame structure. GPI construction and ReArch have helped create some of the area’s newest housing projects including a passive house apartment building for low income residents in Brattleboro. Bread Loaf Construction is helping revitalize downtown Bennington with the Putnam Block project.
Southern Vermont is also home to an extraordinary number of high-performance and green builders, like Helm Construction. Non-profit industry groups like SEON help develop the sustainable building workforce and connect a network of green builders.
There are also many specialty producers of custom-built items like furniture, custom architectural products, or even small buildings like Jamaica Cottage Shop, Vermont Islands or Adaptive Fabrication. Put your carpentry, metalworking or other skills to work with one of these fast-growing companies!
